How ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best business in their area, it does not answer from memory. It searches the web, trusts a small set of sources, and quotes the businesses that show up clearly across them. Here is exactly how that works, and how to become one it names.

Updated July 19, 2026   We keep this page current as ChatGPT changes.

The short version

If you only read one box

For a business question, ChatGPT runs a live web search and writes its answer from a handful of trusted sources. It leans on Wikipedia, Reddit, review sites, and editorial best-of lists far more than on your own website.

  • Get named where ChatGPT already looks. Directories, reviews, and best-of lists carry more weight than your homepage.
  • Keep OAI-SearchBot allowed. That is the bot that controls whether you appear in ChatGPT search. You can still block GPTBot to opt out of training.
  • Give it something quotable. Answer-first pages with clear services, area, and specifics are what it lifts into answers.

How ChatGPT finds businesses

Answer firstChatGPT pulls from two places: its trained memory for stable facts, and a live web search for anything recent or local. Business and “near me” questions almost always trigger the live search.

ChatGPT's training data has a cutoff, currently around mid-2024, so anything newer about your business only reaches it through a live search. It does not search on every question. As of early 2026, roughly a third of all queries triggered a web search, but local-intent queries triggered it far more often, close to 59%. So the moment someone asks for the best option in a city, ChatGPT is almost certainly out on the live web, not reciting what it already knew.

Where that live search runs is less settled than people assume. It was originally powered by Bing. In 2026, OpenAI also runs its own search crawler and index, and reports describe a blend of the two. OpenAI has not fully documented it, so the honest answer is Bing, OpenAI's own index, or a mix. Either way, the fix is the same: be clear, well-ranked, and quotable.

What ChatGPT trusts

Answer firstChatGPT trusts a small set of third-party sources far more than your own site. Wikipedia and Reddit alone drive over a quarter of its US citations. Being talked about consistently across sources it trusts is what gets you named.

This is the single most important thing to understand about ChatGPT, and it surprises most business owners. Your website is rarely the source it quotes. In US citations, Wikipedia and Reddit together account for more than 25%, and beyond those two, no single domain exceeds about 3%. The rest is spread across recognizable platforms, review sites, and editorial "best of" lists. ChatGPT is essentially reading the room, then reporting the consensus.

That means the businesses it recommends are the ones mentioned consistently, across many independent sources, with clear and specific facts attached. A med spa that appears on a local best-of list, has recent detailed reviews, and states its services and pricing plainly gives ChatGPT something confident to quote. A business that lives only inside a beautiful but vague homepage gives it nothing.

Let ChatGPT read you: the three OpenAI crawlers

Answer firstOpenAI runs three separate crawlers, and you control each one independently. The one that matters for visibility is OAI-SearchBot. Keep it allowed. You can safely block GPTBot if you want to opt out of AI training.

Blocking the wrong bot is one of the quietest ways to disappear from ChatGPT. Here is what each one does, straight from OpenAI's documentation.

CrawlerWhat it doesKeep it allowed?
OAI-SearchBotPowers ChatGPT search results. Sites that opt out "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."Yes, allow
ChatGPT-UserFetches a page live when a user asks ChatGPT to read a specific link.Yes, allow
GPTBotCollects content to train future models. Does not affect search visibility.Optional to block
The practical setup: allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User so ChatGPT can find and read you, and block GPTBot only if you specifically want to opt out of model training. Robots.txt changes take about a day to register.

One more technical point that trips people up: AI crawlers generally do not run JavaScript. If your key content, your services, hours, or answers, only appears after a script loads, ChatGPT's crawler may see an empty page. Make sure the important text is in the actual HTML.

How a small business gets named

Answer firstGet present in the sources ChatGPT cites, give it quotable specifics, keep your business details identical everywhere, and build recent, detailed reviews. You are optimizing the web's consensus about you, not just your own page.

Because ChatGPT reports the consensus, the work is to shape that consensus. In order of leverage:

  • Be present where it looks. Get listed in the directories, review sites, and local best-of roundups relevant to your category, and take part in the community threads where your service comes up. This is where your citations actually come from.
  • Write answer-first, specific pages. Mirror the exact questions customers ask as headings, then answer immediately with real detail: what you do, for whom, where, and roughly what it costs. Vague copy is not quotable.
  • Keep your name, address, and phone identical everywhere. Conflicting details across listings make every engine hedge or pick a competitor it is more sure about.
  • Build recent, detailed reviews. Review text that mentions specific services matters as much as the star count, because that is the language ChatGPT can lift.
  • Use LocalBusiness schema. It confirms your identity and services in a form machines read cleanly, even though it is not a magic switch.

A realistic picture

Answer firstChatGPT recommends a narrow slice of local businesses today, so this is an early, uncrowded opportunity rather than a solved channel. That is good news for the businesses that move first.

We would rather tell you the truth than sell you hype. One study found that only about 1.2% of business locations get recommended by ChatGPT for local queries, compared with 35.9% appearing in Google's local pack. ChatGPT is a concentrated channel that names very few businesses per query. The upside is the flip side of that number: almost no small businesses are optimizing for it yet, so the ones that do the work now face very little competition for the spots that exist.

What is changing in 2026

ChatGPT is turning into a place people act, not just ask. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, letting US users buy inside ChatGPT, starting with Etsy sellers and expanding to Shopify merchants. It has also introduced an ads crawler, a sign that ads are coming to ChatGPT. Neither touches local services directly yet, but both point the same way: ChatGPT is becoming a channel where discovery and purchase happen in one place, which raises the stakes for being the business it surfaces.

Frequently asked

How does ChatGPT decide which business to recommend?

For a business question, ChatGPT usually runs a live web search, retrieves a handful of pages it trusts, and writes an answer from them. It leans heavily on a small set of third-party sources like Wikipedia, Reddit, review sites, and editorial best-of lists, rather than mainly on your own website. The businesses it names are the ones mentioned consistently across those trusted sources with clear, quotable facts.

Why is my business not showing up in ChatGPT?

Usually because ChatGPT has little to go on: thin presence in the third-party sources it cites, few or inconsistent reviews, business details that do not match across the web, or a site it is not allowed to read. It also may not be searching at all for your query. Building consistent listings, reviews, and answer-first pages gives it something confident to quote.

Should I block GPTBot?

You can block GPTBot without losing ChatGPT search visibility, because GPTBot is only for model training. The bot that controls whether you appear in ChatGPT search answers is OAI-SearchBot, so keep that one allowed. A common setup is to block GPTBot to opt out of training while allowing OAI-SearchBot to stay visible.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to search?

ChatGPT search has historically been powered by Bing, but OpenAI now also runs its own search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) and index, and 2026 reports describe a blend. OpenAI has not fully documented the backend, so the honest answer is that it is Bing, OpenAI's own index, or a mix, and you should optimize for clear, well-ranked, quotable content either way.
